Teligent Launches Voicemail Security Solution to Protect Against Caller ID Spoofing
New Caller ID Theft Control Server prevents malicious ID spoofing and voicemail hacking
25 January 2012 - Teligent, the provider of intelligent network, call completion, IVR and charging services to global telcos and operators, has launched its Caller ID Theft Control Server, which secures customer voicemail boxes against hacking with the use of caller ID spoofing apps.
Spoofing apps are available from websites and app stores (e.g. iTunes and Android Market) and enable mobile users to go directly to a voicemail box without the target phone ringing, or to disguise their caller ID to trick the called party. These techniques can give hackers undetected access to voicemail boxes and the opportunity to intercept confidential messages.
The solution protects users’ mailboxes by cross-checking apparent caller ID with additional data from the mobile network, enabling it to distinguish genuine calls from those generated using apps for direct voicemail access or spoofing caller IDs. It is already being deployed by a leading Northern European MNO across its mobile network.
When the Teligent solution detects a call with an altered caller ID or a straight-to-voicemail request, it protects customers’ mailboxes by either triggering a secure call-back to the real customer’s number, or requests the caller enters a security code. This denies unauthorised voicemail access.
Ulf Lindsten, VP product marketing of Teligent Telecom said: “These new apps are intended to be used for fun, but they can also make it easier for malicious parties to disguise or change their caller ID, creating more opportunities for a range of offenses such as stalking and anonymous threats, as well as voicemail hacking.
This not only puts the mobile user at risk but also creates problems for operators, as it could expose them to civil liability from victims of this type of malicious activity for failing to act against or stop the activity. Our solution enables operators to identify calls with disguised caller IDs, and to secure subscribers’ voicemail boxes so that only authorised users can gain access.”
Teligent’s Caller ID Theft Control Server is available on the company’s patented P90/E architecture for services, which enables operators and carriers to host and deliver value-added solutions on mobile, fixed and IP networks. These solutions support customers’ individual communications and marketing needs, and include advanced call handling and completion, messaging, mass calling, and next-generation IN services.
